Quote1I'm not in his brain. I'm in his butt.Quote2
―Gizmo in reference to Cyborg[src]

Gizmo is a criminal expert of technology who has confronted the Teen Titans on a number of occasions. He is usually affiliated with the H.I.V.E..

Character history[]

Gizmo is a pint-sized boy-genius with a nasty attitude and an extensive arsenal of high-tech weapons. Along with Jinx and Mammoth, he is an alumni of the H.I.V.E. Academy, and he and his compatriots were looking to be employed by criminal patron Slade. But first he asked them to pass one final exam: destroy the Teen Titans. The three criminals took over Titans Tower and evicted the Titans, but in turn were ultimately defeated by them. During their altercation, Gizmo temporarily took over Cyborg's systems, causing the latter to develop an intense dislike for the dwarven brainiac. The fact that Gizmo later appropriated Cyborg's newly-built T-Car and caused its eventual demolition by the electric villain Overload didn't help matters at all.

Gizmo, along with Cyborg, Robin and Beast Boy as well as a few independent heroes, was later drafted into a competition by the Master of Games, which was only held to increase the Master's personal power. Robin managed to defeat him and liberate the other contestants, and he gave them all a Titans Communicator, making them all Honorary Titans. Gizmo, however, kept this privilege for just about three seconds before Cyborg objected and took the Communicator from him, because he's not a good guy.

Some time later, Cyborg infiltrated the H.I.V.E. Academy as a villainous student named Stone in order to find out about the plans of its then-headmaster, Brother Blood. Unknowingly, Gizmo, Mammoth and Jinx - the latter more intensely - befriended Cyborg, though Gizmo quickly became jealous about his good standing with the headmaster. After the Academy was destroyed by Cyborg, the students scattered and most went freelance. Gizmo, Jinx and Mammoth, however, formed the nucleus of what was to become known as the H.I.V.E. Five, a group of delinquent young superteens. At some point in between, Gizmo was "persuaded" to aid Cyborg by Raven scaring him, when the Titan was infected with a computer virus accidentally planted into him by Beast Boy; in order to do so, he shrunk down to microscopic size and, accompanied by Beast Boy as an amoeba, entered Cyborg's body to take out the virus from within. In the course of that undertaking, Gizmo tried his best to get rid of Cyborg as well, but Beast Boy's final measure against the virus prevented that and expelled Gizmo from Cyborg's body.

After the Titans came under the influence of Mother Mae-Eye, they suffered a humiliating defeat by the hands of the H.I.V.E. Five, but this favor was returned after the Titans had freed themselves of the hag's control - they just sent the pie in which Mae-Eye was imprisoned to the H.I.V.E., who promptly fell under Mae-Eye's spell as well. Later on, Gizmo participated in the attempted capture of Kid Flash, but even his devices proved no match for the speedster's abilities.

Shortly afterwards, Gizmo and his former co-students were recruited by the Brotherhood of Evil, who were attempting to take out all young superheroes worldwide. After an unintentional explanation from Starfire, Gizmo participated in a race held by Ding Dong Daddy for Robin's most prized possession, and even notified a number of other villains about the race in order to raise the stakes for thrills. Gizmo and the other villains, however, were quickly taken down by Red X, with Gizmo being the last to go.

When the Brain executed its plans, Gizmo was sent with Billy Numerous to capture Kole and Gnarrk, but failed. During the final battle against the united Titans in the Brotherhood's base, Gizmo and his H.I.V.E. Five mates were knocked unconscious by a hex from the reformed Jinx while trying to escape, and Kid Flash placed them in the Brotherhood of Evil's freezing machine, taking them out for the rest of the battle.

Physical appearance[]

Gizmo is obviously very short for his age. He is bald, and his eyes have no pupils, but he wears green goggles frequently. His entire costume is a dark green one-piece with shoes built in. The opening in which is neck goes in is quite large, and he has a gray appliance in the middle of his chest. More often than not, Gizmo is seen with a harness resembling a backpack on his back, which is his main weapon.

Personality[]

Quote1Gizmo, the nasty little boy with the really big brain.Quote2
―Master of Games[src]

As the Master of Games once described, Gizmo is a nasty little boy with an enormous brain. He shows no appreciation, care, or respect to anyone, even his own teammates. It is very common for Gizmo to call other people names, such as "slug-faces", "crud-munchers", or "pie-for-brains". However, despite his immaturity and lack of respect for his teammates, he does show some respect to his adults and those who intimidate him, like Brother Blood, Raven, and even Madame Rouge, likely out of fear.

Powers and abilities[]

Quote1Gizmo, the boy genius whose intellect can conquer any problem with an inventive solution.Quote2
―Narrator[src]

Gizmo is a technological genius able of creating ultratech devices. His knowledge of computers and incredible hacking skills make him a formidable foe for the Titans, despite his diminutive size. Despite his intelligent, he finds it difficult to create a level 4 containment field suggesting that his intellect has limit.

Gizmo's main gadget is a harness which serves mainly as an advanced locomotion device. It is capable of sprouting four spider-like legs for walking, helicopter rotors and jets for flight, and two blaster pods and a retractable rocket launcher for attacking. The harness may also mount other devices, such as a holographic projector or even a battlesuit, and - by means of a video game controller - can be used to control external technological devices as well.

Due to his reliance of technology, he virtually has no fighting skill of his own and he is practically defenseless if his harness is broken or lacking access to weaponry.

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Gizmo is seen to be an expert in technology, and can create numerous gadgets, making him a formidable foe for the Titans.
  • Gadgets: Gizmo has created numerous gadgets over the course of the series, which include:
    • Four Spider-Like Legs
    • Helicopter Rotors
    • Built-In Jets
    • Two Blaster Pods
    • Rocket Launcher
    • Battlesuit
    • Holographic Projector
    • Game Controller: As seen in "Car Trouble", Gizmo owns a game controller which allows him to control electronic devices, such as when he controlled the T-Car.

Trivia[]

  • Gizmo is the only villain to physically appear in all five seasons of Teen Titans (as opposed to Slade, who is seen only once in the third season as an illusion and as a Slade-bot in the last season).
  • Gizmo usually makes appearances with Jinx and Mammoth, but appears solo in: "Car Trouble", "Winner Take All", "Crash", and "Revved Up".
  • Gizmo is both a boss character and a playable unlocked character in the Teen Titans video game.
  • In the first season, Gizmo seems to be the leader of collectively Jinx, Mammoth, and himself, instead of Jinx being the leader.
  • Gizmo's name derives from his vast knowledge in technology.
  • In the comics, Gizmo was a pint-sized grown man, not a teenager.
  • In one scene in "Car Trouble", Gizmo's pupils are revealed.
  • In "Titans Together", it is implied that since Jinx left the team, Gizmo has taken over leadership of the H.I.V.E. Five, since he was seen ordering the Five to get out of the Brotherhood's hideout.
  • Gizmo once referred to Robin as "Bird Brain", the same name Poison Ivy referred to Robin in the 1997 film, Batman & Robin.
  • Gizmo makes a brief cameo in season 7, episode 11 "Space House - Part 4" of the spin-off series Teen Titans Go!.
  • The TV version of Gizmo is much different than the DC comics version. In the comics, he is much older and has a beard of red hair, and is more taller. In other variations of the comics he is half Asian and shorter, but still an adult, much closer to the TV version.
